Crochet medallion with flowers

Hi everybody, how is your weekend going? Are you having fun? For me it's all work, but work is fun as long as it is crochet, right? I was working on patterns for the shop when all of a sudden last night I hit upon this idea to crochet a frame sort of thing with flower edgings. I have some crochet flowers from other projects, so I thought I would make some squares and sew the flowers at the center. Hmm... but they would look like normal crochet squares. How about rounds? Na, they would look like potholders. I wanted something different. How about oval? Yes! This is what I wanted. So I made an oval, crocheted some simple, tiny flowers and leaves and... Voila! a pretty medallion or a wall hanger.

You can make it as big as you want and decorate it with as many flowers as you want. I have written the pattern for the one which I have shown here which measures approximately 7 inches long and 4.5 inches wide.

For the oval I used 2 strands of white sport weight yarn held together (you can use a bulky yarn) and a J (6.00 mm) hook. I crocheted the flowers using C (2.75 mm) hook and for the edging I used H (5.00 mm) hook.

The pattern is written using American terminology. If you are using British then, SC (single crochet) would be double crochet, DC (double crochet) would be treble and slip stitch would be single crochet.

Oval

[For the oval I used 2 strands of white sport weight yarn held together (you can use a bulky yarn) and a J (6.00 mm) hook. You may use bulky weight yarn]

Round 1: Chain 12, 3 SC in 2nd chain from hook, SC in next 9 chains, 3 SC in last chain, SC in next 9 chains on the other side. Join with a slip stitch to the 1st SC (24 SC).

Round 2: Chain 1, 2 SC in same stitch and next 2 stitches, SC in next 9 stitches, 2 SC in next 3 stitches, SC in next 9 stitches. Join with a slip stitch (30 SC).

Round 3: Chain 1, 2 SC in same stitch, [SC in next stitch, 2 SC in next st] 2 times, SC in next 10 stitches, [2 SC in next stitch, SC in next stitch] 2 times, 2 SC in next stitch, SC in next 10 stitches. Join with a slip stitch (30 SC).

Round 4: Chain 1, 2 SC in same stitch, [SC in next 2 stitches, 2 SC in next st] 2 times, SC in next 11 stitches, [2 SC in next stitch, SC in next 2 stitches] 2 times, 2 SC in next stitch, SC in next 11 stitches. Join with a slip stitch (36 SC).

Round 5: Chain 1, 2 SC in same stitch, [SC in next 3 stitches, 2 SC in next st] 2 times, SC in next 12 stitches, [2 SC in next stitch, SC in next 3 stitches] 2 times, 2 SC in next stitch, SC in next 12 stitches. Join with a slip stitch (42 SC).

Round 6: Chain 1, 2 SC in same stitch, [SC in next 4 stitches, 2 SC in next st] 2 times, SC in next 13 stitches, [2 SC in next stitch, SC in next 4 stitches] 2 times, 2 SC in next stitch, SC in next 13 stitches. Join with a slip stitch (48 SC).

Round 7: Chain 1, 2 SC in same stitch, [SC in next 5 stitches, 2 SC in next st] 2 times, SC in next 14 stitches, [2 SC in next stitch, SC in next 5 stitches] 2 times, 2 SC in next stitch, SC in next 14 stitches. Join with a slip stitch (54 SC). Fasten off.

If you want a bigger oval you can increase the rounds as it is done here.

Edging

For the edging I used a single strand of sport weight yarn and size H hook.

Insert yarn into any stitch, **chain 3, skip next stitch and SC in next stitch.** Repeat from ** to ** around.

Flowers

I used a single strand of sport weight yarns in 3 different shades of pink and size C (2.75 mm) hook.

Make a magic ring or chain 4 and join with a slip stitch. [SC, chain 3, DC, chain 3, sc] 5 times into ring.

Leaves

Chain 9, SC in 2nd chain from hook, DC in next 2 chains, SC in next chain, slip stitch in next stitch (1st leaf), chain 9, SC in 2nd chain from hook, DC in next 2 chains, SC in next chain, slip stitch in next stitch (2nd leaf), chain 9, SC in 2nd chain from hook, DC in next 2 chains, SC in next chain (3rd leaf), slip stitch in next 3 chains, chain 6, SC in 2nd chain from hook, DC in next 2 chains, SC in next chain (4th leaf), slip stitch in next 5 chains, chain 6, SC in 2nd chain from hook, DC in next 2 chains, SC in next chain (5th leaf), slip stitch in rest of the chains. Fasten off.

Sew the flowers and leaves to the oval. You can sew beads at the center of the flowers.

I hope this would be an inspiration for you to make similar ones. I would love to see your own version.

Happy weekend!

Waterfalls

Courtrallam in Tamil Nadu, South India, is a very popular summer destination. This summer when we had gone down South to visit our parents my husband and his friends went to Coutrallam. It's usually very crowded during summer and I hate crowd, so I didn't mind being left out.

He came back and went on and on about what great fun they had, how wonderful the climate was and that they went to another falls from there journeying through a stunning lush hillside. He suggested that we go to Coutrallam and he would take me to the other falls too. Though I didn't want to go to Coutrallam I was tempted by his description of the other falls which is called Palaruvi. So we made this trip towards the end of our vacation and I really really enjoyed it.

We went to Coutrallam first. The photo that you see above was taken there. What you see is the upper half of the waterfalls. I avoided clicking the lower half where you can see a huge crowd bathing under the waterfalls. After hubby and the kids (we had taken my sis-in-law's kid along) finished their bath we set out to Palaruvi which translates as "stream of milk." It is at the Kerala - Tamil Nadu border.

You can see for yourself the lush green tropical forest through which we journeyed.

We had to park the vehicle and trek a short distance through a narrow path to reach the waterfalls.
The view through the trees was breathtaking.

Luckily this falls wasn't crowded and people were not allowed to take bath here.

Changes

As you can see I have made some major changes to my blog. I changed the header and changed the template from 2 columns to 3 columns. I had wanted to do this for quite a long time but everytime I attempted to make the changes the widgets wouldn't align properly. Today since I didn't have anything else better to do I sat in front of the computer, searched the internet, found a few tutorials and successfully made the changes.  Phew! It took me almost one whole day to figure out everything.

Also, I am going to delete my "journal of inspiration." I have imported all the posts from there to here. I will continue to share interesting projects of other bloggers here under the title "inspiring finds." I think it would be easier for me this way rather than managing a number of blogs. I hope you like the new look.

These photos were taken on the way to a relative's farm in South India. I love visiting those villages where you can breathe fresh air and enjoy the open spaces and I love the windmills.

Have a great weekend!

Feeling refreshed

I am glad to be back after a much needed break, a rather long one too. We had gone down South to visit our parents and also happened to visit some beautiful places. I really really enjoyed the trip this year.

There was no internet and very less crochet. I made a couple of doilies and a started a scarf, that's it. I will share them in a later post.
I have absolutely no idea about what is going on in the blogland. I will catch up but slowly. There is so much to be done and I don't mind staying away from the internet for a few more days.
These lovely flowers are from my parents' garden. My dad loves gardening.
These were taken in the morning right after a drizzle. Did I tell you I bought a new camera? It's a DSLR. Nikon D3100. I love it and I am still learning the basics.

Have a great day!
