Sunflower potholder - free pattern

The sunflower potholder had been in my wish list for a long time. I found the original vintage pattern here. I don't know if any of you have tried it, but I found it very difficult. The pattern simply didn't make any sense to me. I gave up after a few unsuccessful attempts. I surfed the net for an alternate sunflower pattern but since this was the one that I wanted to make I tweaked it and made it easier. If you wish to make one for yourself go ahead and make use of the pattern given below.

I used sport weight yarns in brown and yellow and size H/5 mm crochet hook. I have written the pattern using American terms. My finished potholder measured approximately 7.5 inches from end to end.

Abbreviations used:
ch - chain
st/sts - stitch/stitches
sl st - slip stitch (UK term - single crochet)
sc - single crochet (UK term - double crochet)
dc - double crochet (UK term - treble)
puff stitch - 5 dc stitches worked together in the same stitch

Using brown make a magic ring.
Round 1: Ch 1, 6 sc into ring. Join (6 sts)
Round 2: Ch 1, in each sc make 1 sc and 1 puff stitch. Join. You will have 6 sc and 6 puff stitches, so totally 12 sts in this round.

Round 3: Make 2 sc in each st (2 sc in each sc and 2 sc in each puff stitch). Join. You will have 24 sc.

Round 4: Ch 1, sc in same st, **puff stitch in next st, sc in next st** Repeat from ** to ** around. (12 sc and 12 puff stitches - 24 sts in total)

Round 5: Ch 1, sc in same st, **2 sc in next st, sc in next st** Repeat from ** to ** around. Join (36 sc)
Round 6: Ch 1, sc in same st, **puff stitch in next st, sc in next st** Repeat from ** to ** around. Join (18 sc and 18 puff stitches - 36 sts in total)
Round 7: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next st, **2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts** Repeat from ** to ** around. Join (48 sc)
Round 8: Ch 1, sc in same st, **puff stitch in next st, sc in next st** Repeat from ** to ** around. Join (24 sc and 24 puff stitches - 48 stitches in total). Cut off brown.

Petals:
Join yellow in the sc between 2 puff stitches, ch 9, sc in the 3rd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in next 5 ch, skip next puff stitch and sl st in next sc, turn.

**ch 1, sc in front loops of 5 dc, ch 4, turn.
sc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in the back loops of next 5 dc, skip next puff stitch and sl st in next sc. Turn.**

Repeat from  ** to ** around.

To join the first and last petals together turn the potholder and sc into the back loops of 5 dc of both the petals. Weave in all the loose ends.

I hope I have written the pattern without any errors. If you come across any, please do let me know.

Have a happy day!

A cute crochet bunny

I saw the pattern for this cute bunny in a Japanese crochet magazine. It was in the chart form. I always preferred diagrams to written instructions when crocheting doilies, potholders, etc. but so far I had never tried making an amigurumi using a diagram. On the first glance they always seemed confusing but this one was too cute to give up. It was not as difficult as I had assumed but because of my poor sewing skills I had trouble making a dress for her. Somehow I managed to whip up one.

My scrap yarn rug is progressing beautifully. It is 36 inches wide and right now measures about 55 inches long. I am planning to make it 75" long. I was hoping that this rug would empty my scrap yarn reserve, but with the amount that is still left I think I would be able to do one more similar sized rug.

Have a nice day!

Cowls and scarves for the winter

Let me show you some scarves that I had designed over the last few days for the shop. The one above is a scarf with ruffled edges. I just love the feel of this scarf when wrapped around the neck. It is so soft and fluffy.

This one is a favourite of mine. It has a beautiful wavy pattern and is called the ocean waves infinity scarf.

This is the Coral cowl and has an lovely stitch pattern. I used a single color for this cowl but a striped version would be even more interesting.

All these patterns are available in my Etsy, Craftsy and Ravelry stores.

This one does not have a pattern and it is for me alone.

Also, Allfreecrochetafghanpatterns had let me know that I was one of their top bloggers for 2013 and that my granny ripple tutorial had been one of the top 100 patterns on their site. I am very thankful to that site since allfreecrochetafghanpatterns has been my biggest source of traffic.

Have a great week ahead and I will meet you soon with a free pattern!

Stripy and Frankie saying hi

How nice it is to be present again in one of my favourite places on Earth! I took a long break indeed. However, part of this nearly two-month break was unintended. My internet connection went Kaput at the very beginning of this year and it had taken those guys this long to rectify it. However, this long break from the net world gave me enough time to turn my attention towards a few tasks that I had been neglecting. One of them is organizing and decluttering my house. No, I can't say it is completely organized now but at least I made an attempt. I have made considerable progress with my scarp yarn rug that I talked about here. I will show it to you in another post.

Also, meet these two new cuties basking in the winter sun. Aren't they adorable? I re-discovered my love for amigurumies. So you can expect to see more of them here soon. The pattern for the stripy giraffe is from here and the Frankie from here.

I hope the new year is rocking for you. Two years ago on the same day and around the same time I opened my Etsy shop. I was expecting to make a few sales, enough to spend on yarns without guilt but it has become more than that. I can't believe I have come this far. I hope this year as well as the coming years will be good for me and you. Bye!
